The Landlord

The Landlord comes every week for the rent, and the rent keeps rising. It starts at 300 Credits a week. The game tells you ahead of time how much will be collected and when, and after you pay, the Landlord names next week’s amount.
Missing a payment
Section titled “Missing a payment”- Rent Grace: for 100 Credits,
Joe Wild convinces the Landlord to accept a missed week together with the next one. It is a one-time favor, and you can buy it again once it’s used. - Defaulting: fail to pay and you are evicted. The run ends with you back on the scavenger side of the counter.
Buying your building
Section titled “Buying your building”Owning the shop ends the rent for good. Two lenders offer to help once your business is doing well:
- The First Bank on the Upper Levels sends a loan clerk. The Landlord has listed your building at 40,000 Credits, and the bank asks for a 20% down payment of 8,000 Credits at 75% yearly interest.
- A loan shark offers the loan Upper Levels banks won’t give Lower Levels people, at interest “a bit higher”: 100% a year, repaid weekly over 14 weeks, with the down payment negotiated with the Landlord for you. The shark visits on Sundays once you have 5,000 Credits.
Miss a weekly loan payment and your goods are taken instead. When nothing worth taking is left, the store is seized.
The Mentor’s warning is simple: don’t take a shark loan.
Pay off the building and you sign the
deed, and the Landlord is out of your life.
