Events & the newspaper

The newspaper is part of running the shop. A harvest can make food cheaper; a treatment-plant failure can send customers looking for water. Other headlines just describe life around the station.
This reference covers the event factories and news text in the demo, build 049-Rev3-L. The effects below summarize their descriptions and affected goods, not a fixed price forecast. Check the active event and the actual offer before committing your stock.
Reading an event
Section titled “Reading an event”The game separates ordinary events, faction operations, recurring obligations and cosmetic news. Events can also be queued for a later day. A calendar entry or a rumor is not necessarily active yet.
News can matter at the bargaining table: event entries carry negotiation information for affected goods. See Haggling, blackmail & threats. The newspaper’s existence alone does not make every headline usable as a price argument.
Food, water and medicine
Section titled “Food, water and medicine”| Event | What changes |
|---|---|
| More fresh produce; lower Food prices | |
| Bad Nutrifruit Harvest | A shortage of fresh produce; higher Food prices |
| The seed heist raises Food and Seed costs | |
| Medical Supplies Shortage | Counterfeit stock is discovered; demand for genuine medical goods rises |
| Water Supply Crisis | Treatment-plant breakdown raises demand and prices for Water and purification supplies |
| Minor Water Shortage | Scheduled treatment-plant maintenance causes a smaller disruption |
| Water Supply Surplus | Ice miners return from Beira 41-A with high-purity water; prices fall |
| Oxymore Addiction On The Rise | Addiction and overdose cases increase medical demand |
These events also have customer behavior behind them, such as water buyers, pharmacists, farmers seeking seeds and ice miners selling supply. A water crisis is distinct from the routine production problem of making clean water yourself; see Water purification.
Materials, power and visitors
Section titled “Materials, power and visitors”| Event | What changes |
|---|---|
| Material Surplus | A mining expedition returns; Material prices fall |
| Household Item Surplus | A hidden storeroom is found; household goods flood the market |
| Construction Projects | Construction puts pressure on materials and skilled labour |
| Meteor Shower | Hull damage increases demand for repair materials |
| Power Outage | A faulty Lower Levels generator creates an energy-cell shortage |
| Power Plant Maintenance | A scheduled power disruption, with |
| Who Turned Out The Lights? | Station-wide blackout; energy cells and weapons are affected by the event’s trade data |
| Tourist Influx | A cruise ship brings extra visitors down from the Upper Levels |
| Lower Level Lynching | News of a mob targeting another dishonest shopkeeper; the event affects weapons and armor |
The lynching headline is not automatically your death. Your own Lynched ending is a separate result of antagonizing the Lower Levels. Likewise, cosmetic electrical-maintenance news is different from the active power events above.
Faction operations
Section titled “Faction operations”These are tied to the station’s wider faction system. They are not all missions that the player personally starts.
| Operation | What the news describes |
|---|---|
| Gang war | Black Market violence and increased medical demand |
| Illegal weapon shipment | More illicit weapons entering circulation |
| Revolutionary mobilization | Preparations for conflict; weapons, and for open mobilization armor and medicine, matter |
| Raid on the Upper Levels | Looted homes and businesses increase household-goods supply below |
| Raid on Security | Armed conflict with Security and resulting medical demand |
| Increased patrols / crackdown | Stronger Security presence and pressure on opposition |
| Raid on Black Market | Confiscated weapons and narcotics disrupt illegal trade |
| Raid on Revolutionaries | Arrests and confiscations weaken revolutionary activity |
| Martial law | Curfews, checkpoints and surveillance suppress Black Market and Revolution activity |
| Security budget increase | More resources for Security operations |
| Lower Levels riot | Looting and violence raise Food and Weapon demand |
| Worker strike | Disruption to Food and Water supplies |
| Emergency medical aid / household relief | Upper Levels aid reaches residents below and eases unrest |
See Reputation & factions for your personal standing. Station events and your reputation are related systems, but a headline is not a universal fixed reputation bonus.
Personal and recurring events
Section titled “Personal and recurring events”- Rent Due, Mortgage Payment and Cartel Visit are recurring obligations. Their rules belong to shop and rent and the Cartel.
- Lottery Draw announces the week’s winning number. Its text says at least three matching digits win a prize and sends you to the lottery representative to redeem; since update 049 you can also double-click a winning ticket. This does not establish a prize amount.
- Evidence Locker Break-In has a unique event and a suspicious-goods customer action. It is more than generic station gossip.
Arthur Lafleur’s capture has a corresponding unique news event. See Wanted for the verified bounty list.
Headlines that only add atmosphere
Section titled “Headlines that only add atmosphere”The cosmetic event group includes quiet days, the
PEAT-content controversy, a recycling campaign, art shows and contests, a technology exhibition, a new transit line, a decorative water fountain, community-garden expansion, a cultural celebration and spacewalk training.
Do not buy up stock merely because one mentions Food, Water or a strike. The garden article explicitly says it is unlikely to affect Food prices, and the brief maintenance strike has already been resolved. These are separate from the ordinary shortage and surplus factories.
